Over the past decade, Independent has established itself as a highly regarded, curatorially driven art fair that offers a more focused and intimate alternative to larger, traditional fairs. Known for its emphasis on thoughtful presentation and dialogue, Independent prioritizes context, quality, and discovery over scale.

For its 17th edition, Independent relocates to Pier 36 on the East River, introducing a new setting that reflects the fair’s evolving format. The presentation includes 76 exhibitors, with a significant number participating for the first time, along with a strong emphasis on solo artist presentations—many marking artists’ first solo presentations in New York. Sculptural installations will also be placed throughout the fair, further enhancing its exhibition-like atmosphere.

The fair attracts a discerning audience of collectors, curators, and institutions who value a more refined viewing experience, where presentations often feel closer to curated exhibitions than conventional fair booths. Founded in 2009 by a consortium of like-minded commercial and nonprofit galleries, Independent continues to play a distinct and influential role within New York Art Week.
