SAN FRANCISCO GALLERY CLOSURES & MOVES 2025–2026

The San Francisco art scene has experienced significant changes over the past year, with several established galleries closing, relocating, or shifting to new business models. Rising costs, changing collector habits, and a broader transition toward art fairs, pop-up exhibitions, and flexible programming have all contributed to these changes.

A notable concentration of recent changes took place at the Minnesota Street Project in the Dogpatch district, long considered one of the main hubs for contemporary art in San Francisco. The departure of multiple galleries within a short period reflects broader challenges facing mid-sized galleries in San Francisco and across the United States.

As in other major art cities, many galleries are shifting toward more flexible models, including pop-up exhibitions, shared spaces, art fairs, and appointment-only viewing. While the number of traditional gallery spaces has declined, opportunities to engage with contemporary art in San Francisco continue through these evolving formats.

This page tracks galleries in San Francisco that have recently closed, relocated, or changed how they operate. Please note that it can be difficult to catch every change. If you know of any updates, please let us know.
